LPKR and Environmental Commitment: Wastewater Recycling for a Cleaner Indonesia

21/07/25

Jakarta, July 21, 2025 — In addressing the challenges of climate change, PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk (LPKR) demonstrates its commitment to being part of the solution. As Indonesia’s leading integrated real estate and healthcare services platform, LPKR is taking concrete steps to reduce its carbon and water footprint, improve resource efficiency, and promote the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies.

One of the Company’s tangible initiatives is the responsible and sustainable management of wastewater. Wastewater generated from properties owned and managed by LPKR is not discharged indiscriminately. All wastewater is treated through certified wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs)—most of which are located on-site—before being safely discharged or reused. The quality of treated water is routinely monitored, including pH levels and flow rates, and is periodically tested by accredited laboratories to ensure compliance with relevant standards.

Each type of facility under LPKR’s operations adheres to waste management standards tailored to its specific operational characteristics. Hospitals, for example, comply with stringent regulations for the handling and disposal of medical waste to safeguard patients and the environment. Meanwhile, shopping malls and hotels adopt a more sustainability-oriented approach. To date, nine malls have implemented water recycling systems, while Aryaduta Hotels have integrated drainage systems into both hotel-based and municipal WWTPs, supported by regular audits and the use of environmentally friendly materials in guest areas and kitchens.

Within LPKR’s integrated township developments, centralized WWTPs serve multiple properties with interconnected wastewater networks. Sludge generated from the wastewater treatment process is managed in designated facilities before being further processed in accordance with regulatory requirements.

In addition to domestic wastewater, hazardous and toxic waste (B3) is also handled in strict compliance with applicable regulations. All B3 waste is segregated, transported to licensed facilities, and meticulously recorded to ensure transparency and regulatory compliance.

John Riady, Group CEO of Lippo Indonesia, revealed that throughout 2024, LPKR’s business units generated a total of 4.2 million cubic meters of wastewater, of which approximately 38% was successfully reused. He further noted that wastewater managed by LPKR’s Water Treatment Division originates not only from internal business operations, but also from residents within the Company’s residential, commercial, and industrial estates that fall within its service network.

This commitment reflects LPKR’s long-term vision to build a healthy, sustainable, and responsible environment for the benefit of present and future generations.
