LPKR COMMITS TO WATER MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING INITIATIVES
Jakarta, February 23, 2023 – PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk. (LPKR), Indonesia’s leading real estate and healthcare platform by revenue, is committed to managing and recycling water across several township-scale property developments. This commitment stems from an awareness of the critical need to reduce water consumption and improve efficiency, particularly as Indonesia has been identified as a region with “high” to “extremely high” water stress risk according to the World Resources Institute’s Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas.
LPKR’s operational management ensures that every property under its portfolio optimizes water usage in daily operations and reports water consumption data to the corporate office of each business unit. In its hospital and hospitality segments, LPKR enforces strict protocols and policies to monitor, reduce, and conserve water. This includes monthly water usage reports to detect significant consumption shifts. Periodic audits are conducted to assess usage patterns and efficiency. In addition, regular maintenance and physical inspections of water systems are carried out to detect and fix leaks at an early stage. These checks are performed in-house by each facility manager and addressed directly by LPKR technicians. The company also continues to adopt new methods, equipment, and technologies to improve water efficiency and minimize usage.
LPKR’s water management strategies include the installation of water-saving faucets and sensor-operated toilets and sinks, reducing bathroom water usage through flush capacity adjustments and toilet tank weights to decrease flush volumes, and replacing old plumbing fixtures and pipes.
Over the years, LPKR has also made significant investments to enhance rainwater and wastewater recycling capacity, aiming to supplement water sources and reduce freshwater withdrawal. Several retention ponds have been constructed in residential areas to collect rainwater and surface runoff, which are then treated and reused. Wastewater is also treated and repurposed for operations such as irrigation, drainage cleaning, cooling towers, and toilet flushing. For instance, in Lippo Village, all operational needs for irrigation and drainage maintenance are met using treated wastewater. Beyond LPKR’s real estate operations, its malls, hospitals, and hotels are also exploring ways to increase water recycling at their respective sites. In 2021, recycled water usage in Lippo Malls Indonesia Retail Trust (LMIR Trust) malls tripled compared to 2020.
John Riady, Group CEO of LPKR, stated that from the company’s inception, LPKR has held a vision of making a life-changing impact by developing well-planned and sustainable townships with green environments and world-class physical and social infrastructure. “While our business has grown significantly over the past three decades—especially in healthcare, retail, and hospitality—our commitment remains unchanged: to create a green, sustainable, and thriving urban ecosystem that can be enjoyed by all,” he affirmed.
