LPKR Targets Increased Volume of Treated Water from Sustainable Sources by 2030
Jakarta, 9 October 2023 - PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk. (LPKR), Indonesia’s leading real estate and healthcare platform, reaffirms its commitment to sustainable water management across its developments. The Company has set a long-term target to ensure that 30% of its treated water consumption is sourced sustainably by 2030.
Over the years, LPKR has made significant investments to enhance its capabilities in utilizing sustainable water resources. The Company has constructed retention ponds to capture rainwater and runoff, which are subsequently treated and reused. Since 2022, LPKR has differentiated between the water consumption of its business units and the water intake by its Water Treatment Division (WTD), a unit under the Township Management Division (TMD). This distinction was made due to the different operational nature of WTD, which draws water based on customer demand across LPKR-managed areas, beyond internal business needs.
As part of its daily operations, WTD plays a central role in the treatment and distribution of water in key LPKR townships including Lippo Village, Lippo Cikarang, Tanjung Bunga, and Kemang Village. This forms an integral part of LPKR’s holistic water resilience strategy, ensuring responsible water supply management and mitigating potential disruptions.
In 2022, WTD collectively drew 19.48 million m³ of water for treatment, the majority of which was sourced from municipal water providers. To reduce the intake of freshwater, WTD actively promotes the use of sustainable sources, including rainwater harvesting and recycled wastewater. LPKR has invested in stormwater collection and storage infrastructure, such as retention ponds, which not only support water reuse efforts but also mitigate urban flooding.
On the wastewater front, LPKR has enhanced several wastewater treatment facilities with advanced treatment systems, ensuring that the reclaimed water meets the quality standards required for reuse.
In 2022, LPKR reported 619,000 m³ of treated water sourced sustainably, marking a 19% increase from its 2019 baseline of approximately 520,000 m³. Group CEO of LPKR, John Riady, stated that the Company is on track to achieve its 2030 target of a 30% increase in sustainably sourced treated water. “Achieving this goal will require forward planning and continued investment in large-scale rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling infrastructure,” he added.
