LPKR’S SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

Jakarta, November 8, 2022 – PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk. (LPKR), Indonesia’s largest real estate and healthcare company by total assets and revenue, remains strongly committed to sustainable strategies, one of which is responsible water management. This is reflected in the construction of retention ponds in several of LPKR’s residential developments, aimed at collecting rainwater and surface runoff for treatment and reuse. In addition, wastewater is processed for reuse in operational activities such as irrigation, drainage maintenance, cooling towers, and toilet flushing.

In the integrated township of Lippo Village developed by LPKR, all operational water needs—such as for irrigation and drain cleaning—are met using treated wastewater. Beyond real estate operations, other properties such as malls, hospitals, and hotels are also incorporating increased onsite water recycling systems. In 2021, the volume of recycled water used in LPKR malls tripled compared to 2020.

Meanwhile, in Kemang Village, South Jakarta, a model of closed-loop water circulation has been implemented through water recycling and responsible management. Beneath Kemang Village lies a retention pond with a capacity of 100,000 m³, which collects rainwater and runoff from the surrounding area. This pond plays a crucial role in flood prevention while also serving as a water source for the integrated development. The water treatment facility at Kemang Village processes and produces potable water, while the wastewater treatment plant recycles runoff into non-potable water for reuse.

Currently, 99% of Kemang Village’s water needs are met through alternative water sources, with 63% from rainwater and runoff collected in the retention pond and 36% from recycled wastewater. Only 1% of water supply comes from municipal sources. In addition, Kemang Village has significantly improved its wastewater recycling efficiency over the past three years: in 2021, 99% of its wastewater was recycled (with only 1% discharged), a sharp increase from 68% in 2019.

LPKR CEO John Riady stated that over the years, the company has made significant investments to enhance its capabilities in recycling rainwater and wastewater, with the goal of supplementing water supply and reducing water extraction. “We are also committed to implementing responsible water management practices across all of our business units,” he affirmed.
